Ennui is one of those emotions that’s been thriving during the pandemic. Now that we’re in the homestretch (fingers crossed), how can you fend off bone deep boredom and listlessness for the remainder of quarantine? Dive into a project. Learn something new. Distract yourself with a new challenge. This doesn’t have to be a purely intellectual pursuit. Is there some new skill that you can commit to muscle memory or that literally requires you to get your hands dirty? Making something physical can help anchor you in your body and give you a sense of agency when life feels unmoored and aimless. Whatever you choose, though, try to hold it lightly. The goal is to attach yourself to something that gives you pleasure and purpose, not to seize it in a death grip of cheerless obsession.

The figure on this deck’s version of the 7 of Swords is standing in the shadows looking pained about how they can’t possibly pick up one more sword when they can barely carry the six they’re already holding. This is such an affecting portrayal of the mental exhaustion that I and so many people I know are struggling with after more than a year of pandemic stress and burn-out.
That sort of depletion in one area of your life can turn contagious, spreading to other areas before you know it. Trying to carry all the swords can make it impossible to pick up any cups or wands either. Constantly operating at the limits of your mental resources can make it difficult, if not impossible, to find emotional balance or to muster up the will to translate desire into action.

I drew an oracle card to decide what question I’d be considering today. The Death card invites me to let go of what’s holding me back or keeping me stuck. The 9 and 5 of Swords aren’t totally surprising answers. The 9 suggests that I need to stop letting my own thoughts spin out of control until I’m trapped in a maelstrom of anxiety. The 5 reminds me of the danger of rigid, black and white thinking, especially when it gives me more impossible standards against which to measure myself. The Star card hints that letting go of these ways of thinking can move me closer to hope and healing.

I’ve felt disconnected from my inner compass lately. When I can’t sense where it’s pointing, I start second guessing myself until I can feel like I’m spinning. I started by pulling the Wind card from the @prairiemajestyoracle, the card that asks “How can I deepen trust that my intuition knows the way?” To answer that I drew two cards from the #trinitytarot. The Sun points to the importance of being honest with myself. It’s easier to feel disconnected from your inner guidance system if you’re trying to keep parts of yourself in the shadows. The Nine of Cups reminds me to enlist my emotions in the quest for direction. My protestant upbringing has left me with some residual distrust of anything that feels satisfying or comfortable. More pain doesn’t necessarily mean more gain. Gravitating to what feels pleasurable or pulls me towards happiness can be a sign that I’m moving in the right direction.

By the end of today, I felt too tired and muzzy-headed to do a reading, so I decided to give myself a break and share some of my favorite images from the @prairiemajestyoracle, which arrived in today’s post. The moment I saw @amyputneykoenig ‘s whimsical drawings of prairie flora and fauna, I knew I’d be backing the deck on Kickstarter. Deck creator @karavenjoy came up with a question for each card, andI have a feeling that I’m going to be using these cards as journal prompts as well as for readings.

I don’t use tarot for divination so much as for excavation. Choosing cards randomly and letting the cards spark associations is a great way to access whatever I’m forgetting, repressing, or avoiding. Sometimes, when I look at the cards I pull, it can feel like I instantly know what I’m supposed to get from them, I know it’s because I already subconsciously know what they’re “telling” me, but the message can still feel uncanny.
Last week I tried journaling before bed to purge my brain of any nagging thoughts that might keep me awake. After a couple of days, I stopped, even though the nightly brain dump did feel like it might be helping me relax. When I pulled these cards today, the memory of journaling materialized instantly. They’re such a clear picture of using writing to uncover whatever monsters are lurking in my brain and bringing them to light.

I had barely had time to wonder why I might not have stuck with it when I flipped over the deck to put it back in the box and found the “fear that the light will bring judgement” card. Go figure.
Deck: the #irisoracle by @m.a.r.y.e.v.a.n.s, who also created the @apparitiontarot and the @vesseloracle decks, just two of the many wonderful decks she’s designed. This deck is probably the most tarot-like of the oracle decks I have, which is why I didn’t feel like I needed to combine it with a tarot deck. It has 78 cards, and tarot Youtuber Veronica Jude has even made a video where she goes through the full deck and says which tarot card she thinks each of the cards corresponds to. I get an Ace of Swords, 9 of Swords, Ace of Wands feeling from the three cards I drew.

If you’re struggling with self-compassion here are some questions you can ask yourself:
How can you be more generous with yourself – not just in terms of material things, but also time, attention, and, perhaps most importantly how you talk to and think about yourself? Do you speak to yourself in ways you’d never speak to another person? Are the standards you hold for yourself higher than any you hold for others?
Can you depend on yourself? Do you live up to your obligations to others, but not your obligations to yourself?
Are there parts of your life that need to be dismantled and rebuilt? This could mean demolishing an old, worn-out belief about yourself or constructing a new, solid boundary with someone who insists on transgressing your current limits. Destruction doesn’t have to be disastrous. It can also be liberating. How is your quest for your own liberation informing and strengthening your efforts to fight for liberation for all (and vice versa)? What are you doing to raze white supremacy or dismantle heteropatriarchy?
